For anyone interested in venturing further afield, Manitoga, the home, studio and estate of the industrial designer Russel Wright, is hosting an exhibition of works by Studio Formafantasma. Installed within Dragon Rock, Wright’s historic architectural home made from stone, wood and glass embedded into the landscape (also a national historic landmark), Formafantasma’s objects riff off the relationship between the manmade and natural worlds on multiple levels. Made possible by Magazzino Italian Art, the show features several of Formafantasma’s early pieces, which were specifically chosen to reiterate themes already present at Dragon Rock, be it architectural philosophy or aspects of Wright’s practice. The first site-specific installation from the Italian duo on US soil, this is one not to be missed. The work of 12 members of the Female Design Council is on display in a celebration of craftsmanship, process and design at Carl Hansen & Søn. Curated by the council’s founder, Lora Appleton, ‘Craft in Transition’ brings together a contemporary collection of female-created work that showcases colour, innovation and a unique point of view, in a bid to bring women to the forefront of dialogues around design.

Coinciding with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the talk explored the nuances of identity and race within the design industry. Panelists included Tariq Dixon, founder of TRNK NYC, Jean Lee, cofounder of Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, Andrea Hill, founder of Tortuga Forma, Melissa Lee, founder of Bespoke Only, as well as design writer William Li. The panel highlighted the opportunity for creatives to build inclusive environments—ones that can help forge dialogues and unite AAPI designers amid the current spate of anti-Asian aggressions. Charlotte Kingsnorth’s Animalistic Tendencies show at Objective Gallery cannot be missed, nor can Love House’s unveiling of Swell Studio’s Onna Collection. While Artemest, the purveyor of fine Italian craft, collaborates with Milanese powerhouse Dimore Studio, LES Collection will celebrate the launch of its Volume III ceramics collection with a special showcase at founder Lauren Sands’s Park Slope Brooklyn townhouse. To round it all off, Los Angeles design gallery Marta and New York City–based alternative auction house Catalog Sale will present Make–Do, an exhibition of 24 ad hoc chairs, sourced from historical and contemporary practices.

Kvadrat throws open the doors of its first New York showroom this week, occupying a well-heeled corner of Park Avenue in Manhattan. Designed by Jonathan Olivares, a longtime collaborator of the textile house, Kvadrat’s 8,000 sq ft space is a vision of aluminium, glass and colour. A square catwalk on the second floor offers visitors a unique vantage point of the ground floor gallery, while modular furniture designed by Olivares for Moroso allows pieces to be moved and reconfigured as needs require. Whether showcasing students, emerging designers, or highly decorated professionals across various design disciplines, our programs foster an environment for sharing, educating, learning, and uniting. The overarching aim is to address the pressing needs of our world with attention and care, inspiring the next generation to embrace design as a tool for solving problems and contributing positively to tomorrow’s challenges. In the bright, four-story interior courtyard of Loro Piana’s global HQ, the brand dressed classic furniture pieces from the repertoire of Italian architect and designer Cini Boeri in luxuriant Loro Piana Interiors fabrics.

Japanese apparel and homeware brand Muji is launching MUJI IS, an exhibition at its Hudson Yards location that reveals the genesis of its designs over the past 40 years. Beyond its annual Festival, NYCxDESIGN’s year-round programming serves as a robust platform for the diverse spectrum of design talent found in New York City. The City Connect program is slated to run in three-year cycles, meaning the Mets will wear this version through 2026. The club has contemplated evolving the City Connect merchandise that goes with the on-field look during that time. The subway map on the cap brim’s underside, Benesh pointed out, offers a large color palette to explore, if the Mets so chose. The Mets will wear the City Connect jerseys for Saturday home games starting next week against the St. Louis Cardinals and excepting the June 1 game, when Darryl Strawberry will have his number retired.

Ladies and Gentlemen Studio’s ongoing investigation of Shaker design principles takes new form with ‘Public Access’, a collective design exhibition of works that explore how design can inspire communal acts of sharing in the public realm. Curator Jean Lee has united an international group of 37 designers to create work focused on sharing community resources or connecting with nature. In celebration of its 11th anniversary, Egg Collective’s Snake Eyes collection plays with the serpent as a symbol of fate, chance, and power. The all-female trio has analysed the ideas of transformation and rebirth as they continue exploring form and the use of natural materials in their first major release of work since 2019. In addition to new furniture pieces such as coffee tables, cabinets, side tables and a stool, the presentation also includes the studio’s first ever rug collection. Events include exhibitions, talks, open showrooms and studios, markets, installations and tours, as well as one of the festival's largest events, The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which partners with WantedDesign.
Having hit up the major installations, showroom presentations, and, of course, the Salone del Mobile fair itself, here are the takeaways and trends we’re still talking about. The assembled group of listeners—which included Zawe Ashton, Poppy Delevingne, and Ella Richards, all decked out in head-to-toe Miu Miu—were captivated, and when it came time for the talk to end you could have heard a pin drop. (Until, that is, the room quickly erupted into applause.) Afterwards, guests chatted over canapés and spritzes in the charming book-lined lounge space, with many already beginning to thumb through their provided copies of Forbidden Notebook. FAD Market’s NYCxDESIGN pop-up heads back to the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill, with over 50 cutting-edge designers and makers offering home furnishings, tableware, apparel, jewelry, and more. Dezeen has launched a digital guide to NYCxDesign festival, which outlines the key events taking place in New York City from 18 to 25 May 2023. During the fall of 2023, the first major retrospective exhibition of Baan’s work will take place at Germany’s Vitra Design Museum in the fall of 2023. Ahead of the exhibition’s opening, Iwan Baan will take part in a public conversation during the NYCxDESIGN festival.
While there were so many brilliant and exhilarating works in this year’s strange edition of NYCxDesign, it was Palais des Glaces, a collaborative installation by Lambert & Fils and Atelier Zébulon Perron, that transported me most of all. The atmospheric installation at Lambert & Fils newish Tribeca showroom was composed of pillar candles hanging off steel structures that riffed on New York’s scaffolding and set atop tall monolithic candlesticks. The Montreal-based lighting company opened its space last year but wasn’t able to host a housewarming until now. The candles had been burning for hours by the time I entered the dark showroom, and trails of melted wax careened down the side of the candlesticks, hardening into oozing shapes that morphed throughout the evening.
Danish textile giant Kvadrat will reveal a special Sahco installation within its Park Avenue flagship. Repping the Americas, Philadelphia master metalworker John Pomp is entering the textile game with the new The Portal Rug Collection, developed in partnership with Kyle Bunting. (The new product range will debut at his recently opened 200 Lexington showroom.) And major manufacturer HBF has teamed up with Alda Ly Architecture to debut the latter’s first furniture collection, Bao. In the pantheon of glass- and crystal-making, the rope—a long and hollow element crafted from hot twisting and stretching molten lava—is one of the most technical to achieve. Used widely as a connector, or a “branch,” in chandeliers, it is also one of its most unsung, as designers would rather draw attention to the dainty decorations that hang off it. But all that changed in Milan this year, with the historic French atelier Saint-Louis’s latest lighting collection, Torsade. Designer Stefania di Petrillo has reimagined the rope as a series of playful U- and loop-shaped pieces that train the spotlight firmly on the exceptional skill behind hot twisting.

It has quickly become a New York tradition to visit the well-appointed Tribeca penthouse of British lighting designer Lee Broom. As per the past two years, Broom once again invited visitors into his home away from home, both for private tours and to view his latest creations. This year - Broom’s 15th in the industry - the spotlight was on his Divine Inspiration collection, Broom’s first new designs in four years, which was presented in a residential setting for the first time. Bringing together a dynamic roster of 20 female designers of Asian American and Pacific Islander backgrounds, ‘Upon Further Reflection’ rightly shone a light on the creative outputs of this community. Organised in partnership with the AAPI Design Alliance, the exhibition was presented at the flagship boutique of 3.1 Phillip Lim. Despite the smaller scale and quieter presence — the next NYCxDesign is scheduled just six months from now, and I expect that edition to be more “normal” — there was a palpable enthusiasm in the air as designers and gallerists were finally able to share their work in person.
